I know you are tired of several videos and articles on how to get clear skin. How hard you try, those little dark spots on your skin will reappear after a few days.

Have you ever noticed that your nose has more bumps than any part of the face because of greater sebaceous glands in it. Sebaceous glands are oil (sebum) secreting glands.

This sebum is the reason for oily hair after two days of hair wash. This natural skin protectant hydrates and moisturizes skin.

Sebaceous gland is present on or near every hair follicle. The root cause of some skin problems is because of over secretion of sebum.

Whiteheads and blackheads are not opposite to each other. They are all same except that whiteheads have closed pores while blackheads have open pores. Oil(sebum) attracting dirt and dust from the environment is the reason for black color of blackheads.

Now, I can hear you saying, If the open pores are the real problem Why can’t I close them? No, you can’t close it that way. Pores size and distribution are completely genetic just like your hair colour.

Laser treatment options are available to reduce the pore size but those are costlier options yet effective.

Pimples or acne are caused when these closed pores are infected by bacteria and cause inflammation.

Stop doing it!

Using comedogenic product (cosmetic products that clog pores) and overexposure to UV radiation may increase pore size.

So, stop doing the following things to reduce the chance of large and clogged pores

External factors that can be avoided or modified which includes

  1. Pollution would clog the pores with external dirt and debris.
  2. Comedogenic makeup products may clog pores of sensitive and oily skin. So, Check for comedogenicity before buying any product.
  3. Poor exfoliation leads to build-up of dead skin cells on the face that accumulate and clog your pores.
  4. Excess sweating and poor cleansing may deposit salts and dead skin debris over pores and clog them.
  5. Side effects of some medication especially medications that alter your hormonal levels like corticosteroids, thyroid hormones, etc..
  6. An unhealthy diet which contains lots of saturated fat, white flour and sugar, etc..,
  7. Poor skincare like improper makeup removal, using products that doesn’t suit your skin type, etc..,

Internal factors also affect your pore size

  1. Genetics determines the size and distribution of pores. There’s not much we can do about it.
  2. Hormonal changes caused by adolescence or other causes will affect how these glands function. Stressing over adolescence changes is just like pouring oil into the fire.
  3. Stress changes the hormonal level which would alters blood circulation to the skin.
  4. Aging alters the elasticity of the skin and makes the pores more noticeable.

Do this Instead

American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends certain measures to make the pores less noticeable

1. Using non-comedogenic skin products would prevent products from clogging the pores.

2. Clean your face twice a day with warm water as warm water eases the removal of oil and dirt. Don’t use cleanser that will irritate your skin. Nothing will work in reducing pores until you stop irritating your skin with unsuitable chemical cosmetics or cleansers.

First step to choose correct skincare product is finding your skin type.

Click the below button and easily find your skin type.

3. Use Sunscreen that has higher SPF i.e. more than 30.

4. Do not force those simple glands by squeezing or digging into pores. Just like you it does an extra job in maintaining skin.

Takeaway points

  • Use correct skincare and makeup products.
  • Do not irritate your skin.
  • Clean your skin often and effectively.
  • Apply sunscreen.
